  • Minimum age of 18 to 21 years (depending on the cruise ship company).
  • Although there are some entry-level positions with no training or experience required, prior experience and the adequate level of English are generally required to work onboard.
  • Valid passport.
  • Valid visa or work permit to work if the candidate does not come from the same country where the cruise ship is registered.
  • Valid STCW 2012 (Standards of Training, Certification & Watchkeeping) certificate, which can be obtained by taking an approved class conducted at any schools, seaman’s house or academy of the applicant’s country. In many cases this training is funded by government departments or international organizations, or provided by some cruise lines provide to their employees after they join their positions onboard.
  • Some companies require also a valid Certificate in Crowd Management, Familiarization and Safety Training on Board Passenger Ship.
  • Some companies require a valid seman's book.
  • Up-to-date health certificate after complete a preemployment medical examination by the cruise line doctors to ensure that the future crewmember will be able to perform the required duties of the role and any safety training and emergency drills required by the company.
  • Clearance of a criminal background check.
  • Availability to work at first 5 to 9 months (approx.) depending on the position and company.
