Summary

An offshore diver is a very demanding professional activity, both physically and psychologically, and considered one of the most dangerous jobs in the world, just suited for hardworking people in excellent physical shape and able to stay calm under pressure or in adverse weather conditions. At the same time, it offers an outstanding chance to start a very well-paid activity as a commercial diver with many career pathways and plenty of opportunities to travel abroad.

Requirements

  • 18 years of age (in most countries).
  • High School Diploma (in many countries).
  • Strict medical examination carried out by a doctor approved by the local health and safety agency to test whether the candidate would be suited to working in this position.

Skills

Offshore divers must meet both physical and mental requirements.

  • Physical stamina and physical fitness.
  • Ability to withstand extreme cold and heat conditions.
  • Excellent night vision.
  • Dexterity.
  • Superior reaction times.
  • Excellent swimming ability.
  • Diving proficiency.
  • High concentration skills under stress or demanding physical conditions.
  • Calmness under extreme pressure and ability to cope with changes in the weather and working conditions underwater.
  • Resourcefulness and adaptability.
  • Ability to follow strict safety procedures under any circumstance.
  • Ability to work both as part of a team and alone.

Training

Offshore divers must undergo a rigorous training, depending on their residence and the regional law and regulatory agencies, focused mainly on diving techniques under demanding conditions, and construction and maintenance related tasks in an underwater environment, with a good number of internationally recognized training programs and certifications. Among others:

  • Entry Level Tender/Diver Certification.
  • Commercial Diver Certification.
  • First Aid, CPR, AED & O2 Provider Training.
  • Offshore Survival.
  • Unrestricted Surface Supplied Diving Certification.
  • Underwater Welding.
  • Topside Welding for Commercial Divers.
  • HazMat/Hazwoper.
  • Nondestructive Testing.

Duties

  • General and specialized exploration and surveying, building, maintaining and repair of platforms and underwater structures and equipment used in offshore oil and gas production.
  • Non-destructive testing for cracks, stress corrossion or other structural faults on underwater structures and systems.

Salary

Around 60,000 dollars/euros a year (approx.).
